About Enchanted Parks

Background

Enchanted Parks is part of Light up the North, a network of seven light festivals taking place in seven cities across the North of England.

The seeds were sown for Enchanted Parks in 2006 when artists NVA delivered NewcastleGateshead’s first international festival of light Glow across NewcastleGateshead this was the first time that Saltwell Park was used as an outdoor after dark venue for contemporary art.

In 2007 NewcastleGateshead Initiative commissioned artist Geraldine Pilgrim as the creative director working with producers Arts Agenda and Magnetic Events to create a site specific after dark promenade experience for audiences to explore. In 2008 – 2012 we worked with outdoor arts producers Magnetic Events to develop the event further, commissioning artwork from a range of artists. In 2013 and 2014 we worked with Creative Producer Katy Fuller of Pinwheel who has shaped Enchanted Parks into the narrative led after dark outdoor arts experience it is today, while the 2015 and 2016 events have been produced by Jeremy Shine, the Artistic Director of Manchester International Arts.  Over the past 10 years of Enchanted Parks we have commissioned and presented 91 professional pieces of site specific outdoor artwork in Saltwell Park, the vast majority commissioned especially for the event. We have engaged with schools and community groups in the development of many of the artworks as well as directly commissioning over 30 pieces of artwork from students.
