Tyneside Irish Festival 2018


Some of the best traditional bands in Irish music are booked, enjoy some brilliant storytelling performances and even take part in a guided city tour - this year's programme for the 32nd Tyneside Irish Festival is jam packed (13 - 21 October)!

Saturday 13th £12/£10

David Lyttle Trio, (Jazz) The Globe pub NE4 7AD (in assoc. with Jazz North East)
Jazz drummer from Waringstown, Co. Down. Derry's Musician in Residence 2015. The first Irish musician to be nominated for a MOBO award. 8pm

Sunday 14th

Monday 15th

Paddy Cullivan's 10 Dark Secrets of 1798 Using satire, imagery, historical insight and song, Paddy reveals the 10 strangest things (and Darkest Secrets) that happened before, during and after the insurrection that (briefly) united Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter - in a story that unfolds like an addictive thriller. Don’t miss it! 7.30pm £6

Tuesday 16th

The London Irish Pensioners’ Choir perform The Nuns’ Chorus 7.30pm Pay what you feel
Paddy Cullivan (RTE Late Late Show band musician) and friends. Free live gig in the bar 8.30pm

Wednesday 17th

Raised on Songs and Stories (Irish Elders Project)- St. Benet’s Church, The Causeway, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland SR6 0BH
The story and songs of Delia Murphy by author and her niece Carmen Cullen. Plus special guests. By invitation only call 0191 2610385 for details. 12.30pm – 4pm

Thursday 18th

Film – ‘Don Patricio’  Patrick O’Connell, the man who saved Barcelona. Q and A from writer and director Michael Andersen. GB premiere of this fascinating documentary. Patrick O’Connell died poor and alone in London in 1959. But in the 1920, 30s and 40s, O’Connell was the player/manager at Ashington FC, captain of Ireland and Manchester United, and later an extremely successful manager at Racing Santander, Oviedo, Real Betis (wininng La Liga in 1935), Sevilla and FC Barcelona - plying his trade in the midst of the Irish Rising, the Spanish civil war and Franco’s oppression.  7.30pm £6

Friday 19 October (£20/£18)

Enjoy a fantastic double bill from Buttons and Bows with the amazing Jackie Daly on button accordian and Manus McGuire on fiddle, one of the classiest bands around. The mighty Back West follow who have spent a lot of time performing in America. Their bodhrán player was a dancer with Lord of the Dance too so expect some stepping.  Session players are welcome to have a tune after the gig.

Saturday 20 October (£12/£10)

Ye Vagabonds take the Saturday night spot with their close harmony take on traditional songs and their own compositions. These two brothers from Carlow have been making a big impression across Ireland and the World for a while now. Harpers Fiana Ni Chonnail and Lizzie Affolter support.

Sunday 21 October (£12/£10)

Sunday night is the finale of the festival with the great tenor voice of Kevin Morrin from Kildare with his band performing songs of The Dubliners’ Luke Kelly and many more of the great Irish ballads.

Also  Pat ‘the hat’ Speight – Cork City official storyteller performs throughout the festival.
