Great North Run, The World's Biggest Half Mar

About

The Great North Run is the world’s largest half marathon. It has become an iconic feature of NewcastleGateshead’s cultural and sporting programme and welcomes 52,000 runners to the North East from all over the world.

Starting in Newcastle upon Tyne the 13.1 mile route takes runners through the city centre towards the River Tyne where thousands of people will cross over the iconic Tyne Bridge, where if you're lucky, you might get a glimpse of the Red Arrows passing overhead.

From there, runners will travel through Gateshead while being entertained by many bands on the run. The route, lined by thousands of supporters, leads runners to South Shields where at the top of Prince Edward Road the view of the sea is one of the most welcoming sights along the whole course.

From that point there is just over a mile to go and the crowds get louder as runners make their way down the final straight towards the finish gantry.

The 2018 Simplyhealth Great North Run general entry ballot is now open and entries can be made until midday on Monday 5 February!

Fill the streets of Tyneside to watch the event on Sunday 9 September and soak up the inspiring atmosphere. The event will also be broadcast live on the BBC.

Junior and Mini North Run: The extremely popular children’s programme will take place the day before the iconic half marathon on Saturday 8 September 2018. Entries are now closed.

Great North 5K: The perfect way to kick off the biggest sporting weekend in the North East. Runners start on the Newcastle side of the River Tyne and follow the Quayside route over the Swing Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Taking place on Saturday 8 September and suitable for ages 14 and over. Entries for this race are open now.

Great North CityGames: Cheer on the world's greatest athletes on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside on Saturday 8 September as they compete in a range of athletic events including Long Jump, Pole Vault and spring races.
