Knowing the Romans: Hawks & Horses at Arbeia Roman Fort

About

Get ready as an exciting day of live animals and historical re-enactors will descend upon Arbeia Roman Fort. Come along and meet some of the animals that the Romans used day-to-day and find out how they helped the community to thrive and survive.

Historical Falconry will be pitching up their authentic mews tent with their birds of prey to share the heritage of falconry. Visitors can handle equipment that would have been used by falconers and marvel at the skill and speed of the birds during two arena flying demonstrations.

During the display our falconer will provide a commentary about the bird species, the methods of training, and the characters throughout history who flew them. A Roman cavalry horse will give demonstrations too.  Younger visitors can experience the thrill of a mini chariot ride with Marley the Shetland pony.

All ages welcome
