Durham Opera Ensemble presents "Die Fledermaus"

About

Following on from Durham Opera Ensemble's hugely successful summer tour taking Gilbert and Sullivan's 'HMS Pinafore' to The Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone, the group has gone from strength to strength this academic year. After its sell-out production of "The Traveller's Tale", they will now be bringing the Amateur English Operatic Society translation of Johann Strauss II's fantastic operetta "Die Fledermaus" to The Gala Theatre, Durham.
The story is a Viennese farce of forbidden love and mistaken identity, complete with its very own grand ballroom scene, and topped off with amusing, well-known tunes such as "Adele's Laughing Song" and the Ballroom Waltz "There's Never Been Such a Wondrous Night". Set in Vienna, the operetta explores the relationships between an upper-class man-about-town - Gabriel von Eisenstein - and his wife, maid, and friends, as they try to gain revenge on him for a prank he played on his close friend Dr. Falke. Will the victim catch them out, or will he be too engrossed in the extravagant, frivolous setting of Prince Orlofsky's ball to notice?
An easy watch for both new and returning opera fans alike, "Die Fledermaus" is a fun and light-hearted show, and a great way to introduce new - particularly young - theatre-goers to opera.
Durham Opera Ensemble returns to the Gala Theatre after recent sell-out performances of Mozart's "The Magic Flute", Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", and Bizet's "Carmen".

"Die Fledermaus" runs from Friday 22nd February - Saturday 23rd February 2019 at 7.30pm, with an additional matinee at 1.30pm on the Saturday.
