David Lyttle Trio

About

Born in Waringstown, County Down in 1984, drummer David Lyttle has been described as delivering "the best in jazz coming out of Ireland", but that hardly touches on the scale of his talent or the range of his musical interests. As a player, composer, producer and record label owner, he's as happy working alongside soul, rap and folk artists as he is with straight ahead jazzers, and it's this openness to all sorts of influences that saw him become the first Irish musician to be nominated for a MOBO award, and also to being appointed as Derry's Musician in Residence in 2015.

It's not just in Ireland and the UK that David has a growing reputation. In the first half of 2017 he carried out a 5,000 mile coast-to-coast tour of the US, deliberately playing in unusual venues in order to make connections with new audiences, and later in the year he spent two months as a British Council funded Musician in Residence in Suzhou, China.

All of these experiences feed into his music, but jazz remains at the heart of everything he does - although even here he maintains an international outlook, working with leading players from both sides of the Atlantic. So the trio he brings to Tyneside is completed by Aberdonian Steve Hamilton, pianist with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, and American bassist Michael Janisch, who divides his time between London and New York. So this is Irish jazz, but with a worldwide perspective.
