Alex Hitchcock Quintet

We first heard saxophonist Alex Hitchcock when he came to the Jazz Café as a late dep with Misha Mullov-Abbado's group, and were so impressed that, when he told us about his own band, we had no hesitation in booking them.

Hitchcock himself is undoubtedly one of the rising stars of the UK scene, with critic Ian Mann writing "Only the expression of deep concentration on his face and the lightning speed of his fingers give a clue to the ideas and emotions cascading from his imagination, to emerge as perfectly shaped notes and beautiful phrases". But his quintet is in no sense a one-man band; rather it's a collective endeavour which sets sax and trumpet unison against explosive fireworks created by a brilliant young rhythm section, contrasting spacious melodic warmth and distinctive angularity, and alternating tight ensemble statements with outstandingly creative solos all round.

The past year has seen a growing buzz around the band, but they've played few gigs outside London and adjacent areas (although a trio of concerts in Hungary broke the mould). Now, though, they come to the Café as part of a 14 date UK tour, launching their debut CD; it's a first opportunity to catch a band that is headed for big things.
