Award: Business Tourism Award & Sustainable Tourism Award

Winner: Durham University

Most of us associate University with its primary educational and research purpose; to seek excellence in all aspects of education and transmission of knowledge. However, Durham University is like no other!

Despite the teaching and learning focus, they also support local economy, attracting events and conferences concentrated on academic content.  In order to do so ‘Event Durham’ was created as a proactive event management team, to offer a bespoke service for their customers. Event Durham looks after utilizing space within the University and local hotels to offer venues and accommodation for meetings, conferences and events.

This world leading University is also proud of its fantastic facilities to offer, from an 11th Century Castle, to a state of the art Business School. However, it is their emphasis on treating every customer individually which sets them apart from competitors.

Their commitment to excellence was greatly honored by last year’s North East Tourism Awards Judges. In recognition to their success, they’ve been granted with two Awards: Sustainable Tourism and Business Tourism Award.

We have decided to ask them about the wining experience, hoping it will inspire other businesses to follow the lead.

Why did you enter the North East England Tourism Awards 2014?

We are incredibly proud of our facilities and the services we provide for our clients; entering these awards is an excellent way of raising our profile and ensuring awareness of our facilities and services across the local community.  The whole team was aware of the application and assisted at every level in putting the details together.

What did it feel like to win?

Everyone was thrilled to have won; it was a fantastic achievement for the whole team, and highlighted the importance of events taking place at Durham University and how they contribute to the region’s economy.  Building on our success in the regional awards, we went on to win silver in the national awards.

What impact has it had on your business?

We have increased awareness of our facilities and services and are recognized by our customers as an award-winning team who can deliver excellence.

In your opinion, how important are the North East England Tourism Awards?

We think they are crucial to showcase the best the region has to offer, and should be an important part of any business within our sector.

Why do you think other businesses should apply?

The whole process can be used as a driver for continuous improvement.  Completing the application provides an opportunity to review current processes and assess successes, while also identifying areas for further improvement.  The feedback generated from the application provides an independent assessment about how your business is viewed externally; leading to suggestions for further improvements and enhancements to become even better.

Will you entering again this year?

Definitely, our win has encouraged us to strive to continue to be up there with the best.
