The deadline for entry to the region’s tourism Oscars is looming with just a week to go before applications close on Friday 4th September.

The North East England Tourism Awards play a major role in showcasing the fantastic range of high quality tourism businesses and experiences on offer to visitors across the region, with the gala Awards dinner set to take place on Tuesday 24 November 2015 at Newcastle Civic Centre.

Andrew Straw, Marketing Director of Saddle Skedaddle and The Cycle Hub, which won Tourism Experience of the Year award in 2014,  recognised the impact winning has had on the business, stating:  “The North East England Tourism Awards help promote the thriving tourism industry in the region - the Awards can really help put you on the tourist trail. It was a real privilege to enter the awards and the whole team gained a boost giving us motivation to continue providing an excellent experience for all of our visitors.”

The Awards provide a great opportunity for local businesses to stand out above the competition and gain excellent exposure. Richard Evans, Director of Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, said: “The Awards serve to remind the people of the North East what a fantastic tourism offer we have here on our doorstep. We were very proud to win the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year award in 2014; it is recognition of the dedication of all of our staff and volunteers and of our role in the North East’s tourism economy.”

The Awards are free to enter and winners have the chance to compete nationally at VisitEngland’s Excellence Awards, which provide an unparalleled opportunity for winning organisations to reach a national audience. Earlier this year, seven North East businesses went on to see success nationally following the North East England Tourism Awards 2014.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at destination management and marketing organisation NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “Tourism is vital to the health of the North East economy. Visitors contribute an estimated £3.8bn annually with tourism businesses supporting 54,000 jobs in the region. The North East England Tourism Awards provide a platform to promote and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the industry and I thoroughly encourage businesses to take the opportunity to shine a light on all they accomplished by submitting an entry. It’s always a joy to see the fantastic work the finalists have delivered.”

NewcastleGateshead Initiative, in partnership with the Northern Tourism Alliance and local authorities across the region, organise and deliver the awards.

The Northern Tourism Alliance is a collaboration of the region’s tourism bodies who work together on projects that will benefit the tourism industry across the region. The founding members of the alliance are NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Northumberland Tourism, Visit County Durham, and The North East Hotels Association. The Awards are also supported by Northumberland County Council, South Tyneside Council, North Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council.
