Blacksmith's Cottage is situated on the edge of Northumberland National Park (a gold tier Dark Sky Park) in the pretty hamlet of Alnham. Owner Sue Hugenholtz renovate the 1850s Smithy, transforming it into a luxury 'get away from it all' holiday experience with unbeatable stargazing opportunities. Having previously worked in the airline business, Sue knows how to give the best customer service and is always on hand. Her hard work has paid off and she’s now won ‘Self-Catering Provider of the Year’ in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Sue said she entered because she believed she had a great product (we think so too) and wanted to improve her business profile. She said it felt “unbelievable” to win, “little me against the big boys.” Sue now has a well know business and feels Blacksmith's Cottage profile was raised considerably by the awards.

Speaking fondly of the awards Sue said: “the North East England Tourism Awards helps raise the standards and profile of our very important tourism market in the North East. We have a fantastic holiday destination with everything the tourist could wish for – not forgetting the wonderful residents who welcome them with humour and their friendly manner!

“Businesses should apply for this award because our standards are great and don't be afraid if you have a small business it really doesn’t matter – my little five berth holiday let won it three times!”

We’re looking forward to see what’s next for Sue and Blacksmith’s Cottage in the future.
