Beamish

Beamish is an award-winning open air museum telling the story of life in North East England in the early 1800s, early 1900s and 1940s.  Buildings from throughout the region have been brought to Beamish, rebuilt and furnished as they once were.  Visitors experience the amazing sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the past and meet costumed folk who demonstrate the past way of life.

Beamish won gold for ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year’ in 2014 and went on to win joint gold (alongside Seven Stories) in the same category in 2015.

The team at Beamish said they were “delighted to receive the North East England award for the second year running. It’s fantastic recognition of how brilliant our staff and volunteers are – the warmth of the welcome they provide and their dedication and hard work all year round.

“Applying for the awards presents a perfect opportunity to showcase a business across the regional tourism industry.  It is recognition of all those staff who deliver an unforgettable experience to visitors to North East England.”

Beamish also went on to win bronze in VisitEngland’s Awards for Excellence this year, stating it was “an achievement not just for Beamish, but for the whole region.”

Beamish have continued to enter the awards as they feel they are “an excellent opportunity to put Beamish on a local and national stage and bring awareness of the museum to a much wider and varied audience” and they were right. Following last year’s awards they received local and national press coverage of their success in both awards. Their visitor numbers also reached record levels in 2015 with more than 670,000 people coming through their gates.

Beamish will be entering the awards again this year – only time will tell if they get the hat-trick.
