The Festival of Thrift is the UK’s national celebration of sustainable living. Award-winning, forward-thinking and fun. Managed by a Community Interest Company, the festival demonstrates how reusing, recycling and up cycling can be fun, save you money and benefit the environment. The third annual festival took place in 2015, at Lingfield Point in Darlington.

The team behind Festival of Thrift were keen to enter the North East England Tourism Awards to showcase the festival, putting it on the cultural map as something unique and extraordinary.

Festival of Thrift won ‘Tourism Event of the Year’ in 2015 and the team said “we were very excited to be shortlisted and impressed by the diversity and quality of the other events in our category. We were absolutely made-up to win and delighted to be there on the evening to celebrate with our partners.

“We are very proud that our festival is nationally recognised but was born and bred in the Tees Valley.”

Since last year’s awards the team have admitted to using and abusing their award, “we use the accolade on our website, social media accounts, e-shots, press releases, sponsorship documents – everything! It is impossible to give a tangible measurement on the impact the award has on visitor numbers, partner sign up or sponsorship, but it’s got to be positive. It also makes us (the Festival of Thrift team) feel valued and recognised.”

The team went on to say that as well as celebrating the diversity and quality the regions tourism product, the North East England Tourism Awards are “an opportunity to showcase what’s new in the area and to share together the strength and the importance of tourism in the North East. It’s great to see friends and old colleagues on the awards night too, especially in their glad rags... they’re a handsome bunch!”

So why not apply! The team at Festival of Thrift think “it’s an opportunity to think about your achievements just by filling in the form, and if you’re luckily enough to win it’s a rather marvellous pat on the back and a huge marketing tool to use to your advantage.”

The Festival of Thrift will continue to develop over the next 10 years, moving around Tees Valley each year. It is part of the cultural offer working in support of the bid for the title of Regional Capital of Culture 2025.
