Discover some of the North East’s best stretches of coast and countryside as well as castles, houses and gardens. All cared for by Europe’s largest conservation charity, the National Trust.

Just a short bus ride from the city centre is Gibside, a place that combines Georgian grand design with wildlife wows. Washington Old Hall, a picturesque manor house with gardens and Nuttery is also close by.

Pop onto public transport in the other direction and you end up at the sea, where iconic Souter Lighthouse sits on The Leas, the stretch of coastline where the Great North Run ends. Further up the coast is Seaton Delaval Hall, a Vanbrugh masterpiece that bears the scars of its colourful history.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, Northumberland awaits. Catch a glimpse of red squirrels and enjoy the gardens and grounds of Wallington, take a walk along some of the most picturesque stretches of Hadrian’s Wall or pop into Cragside, home of inventor Lord Armstrong. For an amazing wildlife experience a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see puffins or seals is a must do, or for top views make your way to Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island.
