'Circling Partridges'

Marking the Ways, a project first launched in 1992, aims to use public art to encourage people to explore the country paths around south Gateshead.

In 2009, as many of the original timber sculptures had come to the end of their natural life, a series of new sculptures were installed on the Marking the Ways route.

Many of the sculptures can be seen on a 6 mile linear walk from Lamesley Pastures along the Tanfield and Bowes Railway Paths to Watergate Forest Park.

Although this is a linear route the public transport links to and from Gateshead Town Centre are good. There is also the possibility of cycling the whole route or of walking sections of the routes and visiting the 'nature reserves' as part of a shorter day visit. For the more adventurous a 12 mile circular walk can also be made through the countryside in south Gateshead exploring the original cross country route.

The sculptures are placed in an area which is in proximity to 11 nature reserves. An area which is very rich in terms of its landscape, wildlife, historical and now artistic interest.
