About

We are undergoing a £3.8 million redevelopment. When the gallery re-opens in September 2017, it will be a vibrant and modern exhibition space bringing about a new era for art and learning in the city.

Gallery improvements will include:

conserving the architectural and historical elements of the building whilst modernising the gallery to allow for flexible exhibition facilities;a dedicated multi - purpose learning space;improved lighting;a new picture store;conservation and reinterpretation of Kurt Schwitters’ iconic Merz Barn Wall.

You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Hatton Gallery's collection comprises over 3,500 works, including painting, sculpture, prints, and drawing, with pieces from the 14th century to the present day. The Merzbarn wall by Kurt Schwitters is a cornerstone of the collection. Constructed in a barn in the Lake District during 1947-48, the Merzbarn was Schwitters' final, and in his own estimation, 'greatest', piece of work.

After a close call with closure in 1997, a tremendously generous donation of £250,000 by the late Dame Catherine Cookson ensured the safety of the gallery until such a time as it came under the umbrella of the Great North Museum.

Due to the sheer volume of pieces in the collection, and the temporary nature of many of the exhibitions, the whole collection is not on permanent display; however pieces from the collection are often used in conjunction with internal and touring exhibitions. The gallery is dedicated to facilitating the research and development of its collection on all levels and welcomes those interested in the permanent collection.

The extensive programme of temporary exhibitions means that it is not possible to have the whole collection on permanent display; however pieces from the collection are often used in conjunction with internal and touring exhibitions. The gallery is dedicated to facilitating the research and development of its collection on all levels and welcomes those interested in the permanent collection.
