BALTIC 39 takes a focal point for contemporary art, a gallery space for artists, and injects the type of energetic and supportive community needed to turn the former Ward's printing warehouse into a truly modern project space. With a strong collaboration and support from funders, Newcastle City Council and Arts Council England, and new operating partners, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria Univesity, BALTIC 39 offers not only artists the opportunity to practice their craft but a publicly accessible venue to present their work.
Located at 39 High Bridge Street the building is the home of a new public gallery managed by the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, studio space for 32 artists, and a venue for which fine art students from Northumbria University's Department of Art and Social Sciences can call home.
Giving artists the opportunity to train, create, exhibit, develop and experiment, all in a centre promoting artistic excellence, BALTIC 39 acts as a magnet to bring artists from across the globe together. Offering such a wide range of services to the artistic community leaves BALTIC 39 as an unparalleled asset in the region's rich cultural portfolio.
BALTIC 39 is supported by Newcastle City Council and Arts Council England in partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria University.
The redevelopment project of 39 High Bridge was funded by: European Regional Development Fund, Arts Council England, Tyne and Wear Partnership via Single Programme Funding from ONE North East, Northern Rock Foundation, The Sir James Knott Trust, The Barbour Trust, Newcastle City Council.
