Central Arcade - Shopping Centre in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, Newcastle upon Tyne - NewcastleGateshead

Central Arcade

About

Central Arcade in the heart of Newcastle city centre is a must-visit tourist attraction which provides a unique shopping experience. From the selection of independent boutiques to the spectacular architecture, Central Arcade is not only a retail must-see, but a significant part of Newcastle’s rich history and heritage.

Beneath the glass barrel-vaulted roof of Newcastle's Central Arcade you'll find a handful of luxurious and unique retailers, within the beautiful Arcade setting. Discover exquisite early 20th century tilework, stained glass and mosaic flooring; a real hidden treat to see when you are shopping or dining out in the city centre. Relax a while with a Starbucks or pick up a healthy lunch or snack on-the-go from popular, local clean-eating bistro The Naked Deli.

Cath Kidston, Space NK Apothecary and Mode a Pele provide a high-end shopping experience for visitors to the city as well as independent Grey St Opticians which flanks the entrance on Grey Street.

Central Arcade’s oldest resident store  is JG Windows which is one of the oldest and most respected music businesses in the UK. Founded in 1908, the music shop has been a mainstay of Central Arcade for over a century with an extensive range of instruments, musical accessories, sheet music and audio visuals as well as friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Central Arcade is also a great spot for history buffs to wander. The Newcastle Arcade was first built in 1837 for Richard Grainger as part of his iconic architectural redevelopment of the city. This triple-domed building was originally a commercial exchange and newsroom and later an art gallery. It was rebuilt in 1906 after a fire, to create a cut-through from Newcastle’s famous Grey Street to Market Street and Grainger Street.
