The Mini Great North Run is the UK’s biggest running event for children and continues to grow in popularity each year. Taking place on Saturday 7 September, the day before the main event, the Mini Great North Run will see thousands of young children - aged between 3-8 years - complete the race.

Taking place on the Newcastle side of the quayside, the Mini Great North Run will have participants running across the Swing Bridge to the Gateshead side where they will travel adjacent to the river until they reach the Millennium Bridge. To reach the finish, runners will cross over the Millennium Bridge back over to the Newcastle side.

Each participant will be allocated a colour and a number will represent which wave they will be setting off in; there are usually four waves which start with an opening assembly and warm-up at the beginning of each wave.

For many children taking part in the Mini Great North Run it will be their first experience of mass participation running which is why all Mini run numbers will include an ‘accompanying adult’ bib to ensure that parents and guardians are allowed to take the children around the course.

At the end of the race, all Mini Great North Run participants will receive a t-shirt, a finishers pack filled with lots of goodies and a shiny medal!

Everything you need to know about the Junior Great North Run

When: Saturday 7 September 2019  between 15.05PM – 6:30PM

Where: Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside

What: 4K Junior Great North Run

Who: Children aged 9 – 16 years

How Much: £18 per entry

Website: www.greatrun.org/great-north-run/junior-and-mini-great-north-run

The Junior Great North Run is the natural step in between the Mini Great North Run and the Great North Run half marathon; at 4K in route length, it is not to exhausting for those new to road running but enough of a challenge to test those who are.

The event will take place on the Saturday 7 September and will be later in the day after the Mini Great North Run. It is open to children and teens aged between 9 – 16 years; junior runners will not be permitted to be accompanied by an adult during the race, unless there is a special requirement for accompaniment by a parent or guardian.

Similar to the Mini Great North Run, the Junior Great North Run will also start on the Newcastle side of the quayside and will take runners over the Swing Bridge to Gateshead. The Junior Great North Run then differs from the Mini run as it detours west adjacent to the Tyne to then double-back on itself re-joining the mini route. Participants will then be required to cross over the Millennium Bridge to the finish.

In a similar fashion, each participant will be given a colour and a number which will inform them of which wave they will be running in.

The most significant difference between the Mini and the Junior Great North Run, is that the Junior run is split into three sub waves of boys, girls and wheelchairs.

At the end of the race, all Junior Great North Run participants will receive a t-shirt, a finishers pack filled with lots of goodies and a shiny medal!
