What’s happening over the Simplyhealth Great North Run Weekend 2020?

The Great North Run is so much more than one weekend of events. Events in the Great North Run calendar kick off as early as July to get us ready to celebrate one of the UK’s biggest half-marathons! There is plenty to do, see and enjoy through this fantastic sporting season – including events and activities for those who don’t want to partake in any of the physical sport but want to express their enthusiasm and support towards the Great North Run.

Below you will find a list of some of the different events and activities taking place.

Great North Run Weekend Events: Sat 12 - Sun 13 September 2020

There are events, activities and entertainment in abundance during the Great North Run weekend, all of which contribute to and celebrate the main event which has been growing strength by strength each and every year. For more information about the weekend events, including the iconic Elite Men’s Mile & Elite Women’s Mile as part of the Great North CityGames, Mini & Junior Great North Runs and the Great North 5K please follow the link above.

Great North 10K Race: 28th June 2020

Great Run Local Weekly City Centre 2k/ 5k

Keen to get runners active all year round, Great Run Local is working with NE1 Ltd to launch a free, weekly city centre run. Giving city centre workers in Newcastle the chance to leave their desks, and get fit during their lunch break, the run will take place every Thursday at 12.45, with 2k or 5k routes to choose from. Both routes will start and finish at the Swirle Pavillion on the Quayside and will be organised by Great Run Local with volunteering staff from Ward Hadaway, Barclays Bank and North P&I Club along with Great Run Local volunteers.

Runners will receive their own Great Run local Timing Tag when they register to chart their time. The event is designed for all abilities from absolute beginners to experienced runners. Participants can join online before the event – or register when they turn up.

Course Description

2k

Great North Local Newcastle 2K

Starting on line with the Millennium Bridge, the 2k route is a simple out and back along the Newcastle side of the river. Runners will head south towards the Copthorne Hotel and when reaching the end of this building will make a U-turn before heading back to the finish point located at the bandstand up from the Pitcher & Piano.

5k

Great North Run Local 5K Route

The 5K route starts at the bandstand up from the picture and piano, and heads north past Malmo Quay. Once runners reach the gravelled section of the route, they will make a U-turn and head back towards the Pitcher & Piano, running on the path behind the bar (as opposed to in-front of the bar). When runners re-join the path adjacent to the Millennium Bridge, they will run towards the Copthorne Hotel, making a U turn after the hotel before heading back towards the pitcher and piano. Runners will continue and run in front of the Pitcher and Piano this time, back towards the gravelled section of the course, before making another U-turn and returning to the finish line at the bandstand.

Both routes will be fully signed and marshalled and cater for all ages and abilities.
