General ballot open and closing dates

The general ballot for The Great North Run opens in January and closes in February.

Elite entry closing date

For those applying for elite placement, the closing date for all applications is two weeks before the start of the main event – Sunday 26 August.

What are the different run times for The Great North Run 2016?

  • Assembly area opens at 9:15am.
  • The event starts at 10.00am.
  • The Elite Wheelchair race will set off at 10.10am.
  • The Elite Women race will begin at 10.15am.
  • Elite Male Athletes will set off at 10.40am.
  • General ballot runners will also set off at 10.40am respective of their allocated assembly zones.

What time do you have to be in your pen?

Participants need to be in their allotted pens by 10.30am, otherwise they will have to join the marathon at the back. If a participant arrives after 11.30am then they may not be able to take part.

Details of different events and activities will be confirmed by The Great Run Company, Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Council and South Tyneside Council closer to the time of the event.
