Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Newcastle and Gateshead

Herbivores of Newcastle and Gateshead, you're spoiled for choice! On both sides of the Tyne you'll find an abundance of restaurants with excellent vegetarian and vegan food options to tempt you, as well as several exclusively vegetarian and vegan restaurants that are really something special.

Newcastle is proud to boast several fully vegetarian restaurants, including Sky Apple Cafe in Heaton, and Junk It Up (formerly The Bohemian) and Super Natural Cafe both in Newcastle city centre, which all have plenty of vegan options too. The Ship Inn, Ouseburn has a celebrated vegan menu which has garnered a string of top reviews. New to Gateshead in 2017, Grumpy Panda Coffee Bar and Diner is the FIRST fully vegan American-style diner to open in the North East and the first dedicated vegan restaurant in Gateshead. A visit to Kiln in Ouseburn is a must. This hipster's paradise combines urban chic decor, busy ceramic workshop and bustling cafe and bar. Serving Mediterranean sharing platters, tasty hash bowls and much more - vegans and vegetarians will be impressed with the homemade, fresh food on offer.

But for exciting vegan or vegetarian food in Newcastle and Gateshead, you don't need to look only for fully meat-free restaurants. Many local independent restaurants cater generously for vegetarians and vegans, with Indian restaurants like Dabbawal and UryItalian restaurants such as The Herb Garden and Pani's Cafe Bar; Mexican restaurants like Zapatista; Gateshead pub The Central and even burger restaurants including the Fat Hippo offer outstanding vegetarian and vegan dishes.

On the Gateshead side of the Tyne, choose from the likes of The Staiths Cafe, and Arch Sixteen Cafe for light bites, but Newcastle and Gateshead vegetarian food isn't all informal. Even fine dining restaurants such as Artisan and Jesmond Dene House Restaurant offer exceptional vegetarian and vegan food in Newcastle, perfect for those extra special occasions.
