Tea Shops

If there’s one thing the British love, its tea, and the north east is no exception. Tea shops in Newcastle and Gateshead pride themselves on serving the best brews around - and there’s certainly no shortage of Earl Grey, thanks to its famous regional connections.

There are plenty of opportunities to grab a breakfast brew or something a little fancier at any of the welcoming cafes and tea shops in Newcastle. Quilliam Brothers, the Budapest-style tea house is one of the regions’ favourites with white, black and green loose-leaf teas sourced from all over the world. Served with fresh honey and a selection of delicious sandwiches and cakes, the folks at Quilliam Brothers, which is open until midnight, certainly know their oolongs from their rooiboos.

Tea Sutra is also ever-popular with tea lovers; pouring organic and rare teas in the tranquil setting of their top floor tea room, this laid-back Newcastle tea shop is scattered with comfy sofas and cushions for unwinding with your selection of fruity or herbal teas.

Heading towards the City Centre, you can grab a traditional jam and cream scone with a cuppa, or tuck into something more filling at the family-friendly Olive and Bean. Or if you’re celebrating a special occasion, Newcastle and Gateshead have an ample selection of cafes in which to enjoy Afternoon Tea, including the Great British Cupcakery. This vintage tea room-style 'Bakehouse and Parlour' specialises in delicate tea sandwiches chased down with enormous slabs of cake and sweet treats, all served on delicate and twee hand-painted crockery.

If a classic cup of tea or coffee with breakfast or lunch is more your style, you can opt for vegetarian and vegan treats at Scrumpy Willow and the Singing Kettle or soups and salads at The Baltic Café Bar. The Butterfly Cabinet in Heaton is also a great spot for a builders-style brew, and you may want to stay and try their delicious all day breakfasts which have earned them a rightful place on our list of the Best Breakfast restaurants and cafes in Newcastle.
