Coffee Shops

The north east has undergone something of a coffee revolution over the past few years. You can now find dozens of fantastic coffee shops in Newcastle and Gateshead, where you can get your caffeine fix right on your doorstep.

Whether you’re grabbing an Italian espresso on the way to work, meeting friends for a catch up over a cappuccino, or simply relaxing with a latte and a good book on a Sunday afternoon, you’ll find that Newcastle and Gateshead have enough beans to keep you going all year round.

For those who like their coffee with character, Blake’s Coffee House in Newcastle City Centre is an old favourite with a venue that regularly hosts live music. Tyneside Cinema’s latest project Vicolo is the ideal quick stop for freshly brewed continental coffees, whilst The Cycle Hub Café makes a refreshing break for those strolling along the Quayside.

Regardless of whether you’re a cat or a dog lover, there’s a coffee shop with a difference waiting for you in Newcastle. With not one, but two, cat cafes on offer, plus the garden themed dog café Dog and Scone, you can get your furry fix any day of the week.

If something more exotic is to your taste, Pink Lane Coffee is one of the most stylish coffee houses around and prides itself on high quality coffee sourced from all across the globe and roasted in-house. Nearby, Ouseburn Coffee Company offer their own freshly roasted beans as well as hand-made artisan snacks. If an Instagram worthy cup of coffee is your kind of thing then look no further than The Great British Cupcakery, which serves up a deliciously decadent pink latte, perfectly complementing their extensive selection of cupcakes and sweet treats.

It’s not just coffee that gets this region buzzing; many of Newcastle’s best tea and coffee shops are a dab hand when it comes to brunch too. Olive and Bean is a bright and family friendly café with some of the best cakes, sandwiches and Afternoon Tea in the city whilst Café Royal is famed for its stylish bistro menu.

Looking to catch up with a friend after work over a quality cup of tea or coffee? The quirky Quilliam Brothers tea house is open until midnight Monday – Saturday. Whether you’re visiting for an early pick-me-up or an end of day wind-me-down, you’ll find over sixty types of loose-leaf tea and a wide range of baked goods available to choose from.

Those heading out from the city can also find freshly roasted coffee at Deli Espresso in Gosforth, which serves up fresh, organic health salads and sandwiches alongside its frothy coffees and tray bakes, whilst Arlo and Cake Stories in Jesmond are perfect for grabbing a spot of lunch or indulgent cake with a tall macchiato or syrupy latte. The Staiths Café in Gateshead is also gathering momentum as one of the Best Breakfast spots in the region, proving that the north east has good coffee running through its veins on both sides of the river.
