Pubs in Newcastle and Gateshead

Whether you're looking for a traditional boozer, a cool craft brewpub or a stylish and contemporary gastropub, there are pubs in Newcastle and Gateshead that are to everyone's taste, and wherever you are in the city you'll never be far from a great watering hole.

One of the best Newcastle pubs has to be The Free Trade Inn, a no-nonsense 'proper' pub in the Ouseburn Valley that boasts impressive views down the Tyne, and a resident cat called Craig David. If that's not enough to lure you in, The Free Trade Inn always has a vast selection of beers and ales from several independent breweries, so there's always something new to try, as well as locally produced pies to stave off those hunger pangs.

In fact, the Ouseburn Valley is something of a gold mine for excellent pubs in Newcastle, as it's where you'll also find The Cluny, The Cumberland Arms, The Tyne Bar and the Ship Inn - did someone say pub crawl? - but should you be looking for a pub a little further up on Newcastle Quayside, you'll find The Bridge Tavern hard to beat. As one of Newcastle's finest brewpubs, they proudly serve from their very own micro-brewery on site, and it happens to be one of the best Dog-Friendly Pubs in Newcastle too.

Also on the Quayside is The Broad Chare, which has all the feel of a traditional pub, with a contemporary gourmet gastropub twist - it's widely regarded as one of the best Fine Dining restaurants in Newcastle. Or for a perfect pint in the City Centre, Bacchus on High Bridge is a real ale pub that's designed to look like the inside of a cruise liner - quirky, yet reassuringly cosy.

The Union Rooms near Newcastle Central Station is the ideal spot for a post-work pint, or a tipple before your train, or if you're in Newcastle for match day The Earl of Pitt Street is one of the most stylish pubs around St James' Park and offers a tempting, internationally-inspired food menu that's a refreshing alternative to the usual pub fare.

Best known for its trendy bars, there is a varied selection of pubs in Jesmond to choose from too, including The Collingwood Arms and The Punch Bowl, ideal for relaxing in after a walk in Jesmond Dene. Over in Gosforth, the exceptionally dog-friendly Brandling Villa is everyone's favourite local, and The Gosforth Hotel and The Brandling Arms always offer a warm welcome too.South of the Tyne, some of the best pubs in Gateshead include The Skiff Inn in Blaydon, and The Schooner near the Metro Centre which also rustles up an fantastic Sunday lunch. The Engine Room offers a fine selection of real ales, or if you're not wanting to stray too far from Gateshead Quayside, The Central is a cool hangout which regularly plays host to live music, but has plenty to please everyone with an impressive range of hand-pulled and kegged ales to help you find your new favourite.
