Things to do at the Coast

The North East Coast offers a great day out, whether visiting solo, as a couple or as a family. No matter your age or interests, there's something for everyone at the Coast.

The popular village of Tynemouth is well known for its long history, which dates back to the Iron Age. Due to its position just north of Hadrian's Wall, it has always held a key strategic position for military forces. Tynemouth Priory and Castle was originally built as a monastery in the 7th century and is said to be the burial place of several ancient Northumbrian kings, making it the perfect family destination to explore the long and fascinating history of the region.

If you're looking for some retail therapy, Tynemouth Market is held in the village's Metro station every weekend while a five minute walk into the village will bring you to the Green Ginger Shopping Arcade; this converted church now houses a number of independent boutiques and cafes.

There's nothing more energizing than a walk on the beach and the North East coast provides plenty to choose from. Discover the medieval castles at Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh or plodge in the sea at Amble. King Edward's Bay and Longsands beaches at Tynemouth offer soft sand and stunning views while Druridge Bay and Blyth provide dunes and rockpools to explore as part of any exciting outdoor adventure.

No trip to the seaside would be complete without traditional British fish and chips or an ice-cream and the Coast is a great spot for bars and restaurantsCrusoe's coffee shop on Longsands beach offer a warm welcome and an array of delicious treats and hot drinks while Riley's Fish Shack and The Old Boathouse in Northumberland serve fresh, locally-sourced seafood, often straight from the fishing boat.

Further up the coast, the seaside resorts of Cullercoats, Blyth and Whitley Bay offer even more attractions as well as a variety of places to stay to stay on your visit. The visitor centre and nature reserve at St Mary's Lighthouse and Island, with its array of local flora and fauna, is the perfect spot for wildlife spotting while Bluereef Aquarium is great to visit on a rainy day for a fun and educational family visit.

Situated on the beautiful coastline south of the River Tyne in South Shields is Ocean Beach Pleasure Park - the biggest free admission amusement park in the North East. With over 40 rides and attractions, amusement arcades, game stalls, Quasar and more, we cater for all ages. Visitors South Shields during the autumn months can witness Ocean Beach's spectacular close of season firework display as well as popular Drive-in Movies event which boasts a must-see programme year-on-year.
