Events on the Quayside

The Quayside is undoubtedly one of the best places to experience nightlife in Newcastle and Gateshead, so it's no surprise there are a number of exciting events that take place on the Quayside throughout the year.

Perhaps one of the best events to check out on your visit to NewcastleGateshead is the weekly Quayside Market, which takes place on a Sunday and involves vendors from across the North East selling everything from gifts, books and clothing to homemade sweets, cakes and street food.

Another one of the reasons you'll find yourself on the Quayside is if you're watching or partaking in the iconic Great North Run, held annually each September. While the starting line begins near the Town Moor, the pinnacle of this half marathon is the moment when the runners begin to pass over the Tyne Bridge with the Red Arrows flying above. This iconic scene has played out every year since 1981 and crowds regularly gather all along the Quayside to see thousands of runners excitedly cross the bridge each September.

New Year is also a key time to visit the Quayside, thanks to the stunning organised firework displays at Midnight on December 31st to welcome in the New Year. There's nothing quite like seeing Sage Gateshead, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Tyne Bridge illuminated with shimmering, colourful explosions and the atmosphere is always electric, making a perfect event to bring the whole family to.

There's also a number of other exciting events on the Quayside which serve as 'hidden gems' waiting to be uncovered. From eclectic performances at Sage Gateshead to frequently changing exhibitions at BALTIC Centre For Contemporary Art, there's always something fun going on in the area. Keep an eye out for some of the special events hosted at Baltic Square or make sure you swing by when the Tall Ships are in town to catch a glimpse of these stunning vessels when they sail to our shores each year in July.
