If you're visiting NewcastleGateshead any time soon, you might be interested in the events in Northumberland that take place throughout the year. From music festivals to foodie extravaganza's, historic exhibitions and sporting events, experience traditional Northumberland music, art, food, history and life first-hand, within this diverse and fascinating region.

There are countless things to do in Northumberland during Spring and Summer which will keep kids occupied during the half term and school holidays. Join a number of the guided walks around at the likes of Wallington Hall or Cragside Gardens, or explore the region for the chance to take part in egg hunts at Easter, baking days, archaeological 'digging' adventures, crafts classes and nature trails during the summer, as well as themed days out such as Broomstick Riding at Alnwick Castle.

And Northumberland isn't just great for the kids. Adults can pick and choose from a selection of festivals and markets including the Lindisfarne Music Festival, Alnwick Beer Festival and Belford Arts Festival to get a true taste of the friendly Northumberland culture. Those who live for the outdoors are also spoiled for choice, with running and cycling events throughout the year, which will get active types training and on the move. If relaxation is more your thing, there are also open garden days through the National Gardens Scheme which allow you to experience the tranquil Northumberland countryside and public gardens at leisure.

The festive season also brings plenty of activities and events to Northumberland, which cater for every age and interest. A number of National Trust venues, English Heritage sites and public tourist attractions hold special weekend and seasonal events such as ghost tours at the likes of Chillingham Castle and autumn walks during to see local wildlife such as red squirrels in their natural habitat. You can also get into the festive spirit with organised Bonfire Nights, pumpkin carving at Halloween and New Year firework displays in the likes of Alnwick, Hexham and Morpeth.

Many of the towns in Northumberland also hold annual Christmas markets and winter events such as Astronomy evenings at Kielder where you can observe the stars in the clear night sky.
