Things to do in Jesmond

There are a number of great things to do in Jesmond thanks to its central location, excellent transport links and great community culture.

If you're looking to spend a day out with the family, the first port of call should be the beautiful Jesmond Dene. This luscious green space located at the heart of Jesmond was laid out during the 1960s by industrial figurehead Lord Armstrong, who lived there for many years with his wife. This sprawling park is dotted with woodland, bridges, waterfalls and pools as well as the Ouseburn River which runs down towards the the Tyne.

Every third Saturday of the month, the famous Armstrong Bridge is host to a food market and arts and craft fair while Pet's Corner is a free entry petting zoo which is home to a number of animals including peacocks, goats, alpacas, pigs and birds, as well as a play area for kids. In the summer, Jesmond Dene is the place to be with number of events and festivals including outdoor performances by Heartbreak Productions, so be sure to bring a blanket or a deck chair to enjoy with an ice cream.

You can also venture to Jesmond Dene House, the former home of Lord Armstrong, which overlooks the spectacular views of the Dene. Here you can book a room in the luxurious hotel or dine in style in the restaurant, which is frequently hailed as one of the best in Newcastle, and well known for its afternoon tea.

Jesmond is also a haven for retail lovers as it is home to a number of charity shops, vintage traders and stylish independent fashion boutiques. Head to Brentwood Avenue for a quiet browse in any of the small shops and quaint cake shops located here, or rummage for treasure in the Oxfam Music and Book store just off Acorn Road, where you can find rare and collectable books and vinyl. Fern Avenue Antique Centre is a great place to pick up vintage furniture and jewellery while Jules B on Osborne Road or Oliver Bonas nearby, are the perfect places to snap up luxury fashion gifts on your visit.

If you really want to get involved with Jesmond's thriving local community, the library, local swimming pool, leisure centre and nearby churches host a number of community events all year round including indoor Christmas markets, summer fare's as well as club nights and classes for everything from tennis to yoga.

A Bank Holiday in Jesmond is especially exciting, as Osborne Road becomes the ultimate go-to place for a night out. People from all over the region flock the popular spots such as As You Like It, The Cherry Tree and SoHe for cocktails, or drinks out on the terrace. Meanwhile the green space located just next to the Great North Road is favoured by students and young professionals looking for a more casual drink in the sun, as the sprawling field makes it a great location for picnics and outdoor games.
