Organiser verdict:
Questions answered by Yasmin Ibrahim, Project Administrator at Newcastle University.

Why did you choose to bring your conference to NewcastleGateshead?
Newcastle University’s Human Nutrition Research Centre (HNRC) was successful in a bid to bring the 2018 NuGOweek to Newcastle. We felt that our University and region would be an excellent back drop for NuGOweek, and hosting the event in the city allowed our researchers to showcase the excellent work being conducted in Newcastle. The city itself is very compact and has a great deal to offer visitors. Transports links to the airport and station are excellent and there are very good, reasonably priced, hotels in close proximity to many different conference venues.

The Assembly Rooms

How do you feel Newcastle University benefitted from bringing the event to NewcastleGateshead?
As the hosts of this conference, I feel we benefited from the excellent choice of venues on offer. Newcastle is a compact city and therefore the logistics of a conference were easily accommodated. Restaurants and hotels were easily accessible from the Centre for Life and the excellent transport links we have here eased the journey for our delegates.

How do you feel your delegates benefitted from the event being hosted in NewcastleGateshead?
Our delegates benefited from their first-hand experience of the excellent research being conducted at Newcastle University. Newcastle itself is a vibrant city and our delegates appreciated the social events on offer – a showcase of the brilliant city that is Newcastle!

NewcastleGateshead's bridges

How did NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau support in the organisation of your event?
NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau were very helpful in sourcing various potential venues, providing a breakdown of costs and general assistance. This greatly reduced the workload for the organiser, as did the hotel booking facility offered by the Convention Bureau.

Did you come across any difficulties/hurdles when organising the event and how did you overcome these?
No difficulties or hurdles as such, just the nervousness of arranging a large-scale conference. The staff at the Centre for Life were very helpful in accommodating our needs and ensuring our delegates felt very welcome!
