Our best moments of 2018

It’s December and we’re feeling nostalgic of a fantastic year for NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau! So nostalgic, that we’ve come up with a list of some of our best moments of 2018…

MIA Destination Summit
The team attended the Meetings Industry Association’s inaugural Destination Summit in February. The aim of the summit is to enable UK convention bureaux and destinations to share knowledge and experience and ultimately to attract more conferences and events. The two-day event was a huge success and featured insightful talks and workshops from leading experts.

We are also very proud to celebrate our 10th year anniversary of MIA Membership in 2018!

Meet NewcastleGateshead
On 28 February, we launched our exciting new publication ‘Meet NewcastleGateshead’ while exhibiting at International Confex. We were very proud to have worked with North East Times who allowed us to take a fresh approach to the traditional venue guide, showcasing our knowledge economy strengths and really getting to the heart of what makes our destination so special for events!

Silver award for ‘Best UK Convention Bureau’
In March, we were delighted to take home the silver award for Best UK Convention Bureau at the prestigious Meetings and Incentive Travel Awards, which took place on the same weekend as the 90th Academy Awards in Hollywood! We would like to give a huge thanks to everyone who took the time to vote for us, we couldn’t have done it without the support from our fantastic clients.

Explore GB
In March, we welcomed VisitBritain’s flagship annual travel trade show – Explore GB – to the region. The event attracted 300 international buyers from over 30 countries to do business with 300 travel industry suppliers. It was a brilliant opportunity to showcase NewcastleGateshead and the huge variety of experiences that we have on offer to tourism visitors.

Post-Meetings Show familiarisation trip
After a successful Meetings Show in June, the team welcomed 11 international event buyers to NewcastleGateshead for a post-event familiarisation trip focused around the Great Exhibition of the North. Some of the highlights included a drinks reception on the roof on Newcastle Castle, a tour and dinner at the iconic St James’ Park, a dinner on stage at Sage Gateshead (which had never been done before!) and a magical morning at Alnwick Castle accompanied by broomstick training. The trip was a huge success, and something we could not have achieved without the support of our partners.

A record September
A record number of conferences and events took place in NewcastleGateshead in September, as our destination continues to attract high-profile events with sector-leading content. We were involved in a total of 51 events which brought over 3,500 delegates to the region in September, leading to an economic impact of over £4.3m! These events presented us with a brilliant opportunity to showcase our sector strengths and to be able to introduce delegates to our amazing city.
