NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has today (28 February) launched a new publication aimed at promoting its knowledge economy strengths as well as being a guide for people organising conferences and events in the North East of England.

Meet NewcastleGateshead is a collection of feature-driven articles promoting the research, business and sector strengths of the region. It introduces readers to key North East figures, featuring interviews with leaders from the world of business, academia, culture and sport – as well as some famous faces – to help get to the heart of what makes Newcastle, Gateshead and North East England a relevant and important place.

As well as a welcome provided by famous Geordies Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (Ant and Dec), who explain why they are so proud to be from Newcastle, TV presenter Alexander Armstrong shares his view on the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the region and Alan Shearer talks about the city as the perfect stage for major international sporting events.

The guide also introduces readers to the Duchess of Northumberland, the Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University and other local business leaders. It also features some of the stars of the events industry – those who work hard behind the scenes every day to make conferences and events in NewcastleGateshead run seamlessly.

Paul Szomoru, Head of Business Events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “I believe Meet NewcastleGateshead is a first in this industry – a quality magazine-style publication that makes a really interesting read and shares many of the life-changing innovations happening here that many people may not know about yet.

“Securing interviews with some well-known celebrities from the region including Ant and Dec, Alexander Armstrong and Alan Shearer, as well as many other influential figures, has helped us to tell our story of why NewcastleGateshead is a relevant, vibrant place that organisers should consider for hosting their next event.

“It’s an evolution from our conference and events guide. It still showcases all our fantastic hotels, venues and support service providers so that readers can use it as an invaluable reference tool to help them bring an event to the region. But we wanted a piece of print that really introduces people to our city and region and tells you about some of the amazing things happening here today, one of the examples being the interview with Professor Mark Tewdwr-Jones of Newcastle City Futures who explains what it means for Newcastle to be a smart and sustainable city”.

Key business figures are also interviewed in the guide, including Rob Charlton of Space Group, who talks about the digital and tech sector and the Building Information Modelling (BIM) revolution that is happening in NewcastleGateshead, Ryder Architecture's Paul Bell who discusses the ambitious plans for Hyperloop One, which mean the whole of the North of England and Scotland could be connected in under 47 minutes, and Virgin Money's Jayne-Anne Gadhia who shares her thoughts about NewcastleGateshead as a great place to do business.

The team at North East Times, a quality monthly publication that provides a voice for those shaping the North East economy, was behind the design and editorial content of the publication.

John Duns, Director of North East Times, said: “Our team is both delighted and proud to have worked with NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau on this prestigious publication.

“As an independently-owned North East-based business, it’s particularly pleasing to be involved in an initiative which promotes our fantastic region nationally and internationally.”

Paul Szomoru adds: “Working collaboratively with North East Times on this new publication allowed us to take a fresh approach to a traditional venue guide, bringing readers some brilliant editorial content and a new contemporary design. We were so pleased with how this new partnership worked – the team were fantastic to work alongside and we couldn’t be happier with the finished outcome.”
