NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau was awarded silver for ‘Best UK Convention Bureau’ at a prestigious industry awards ceremony on Friday 26 February.

The team, part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, won the award at the Meetings and Incentive Travel Industry Awards 2016. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau beat off stiff competition from other prestigious UK bureaux including Edinburgh, Liverpool and London. Glasgow was awarded gold for the tenth year in a row.

Paul Szomoru, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to be awarded such a prestigious accolade. These awards celebrate the best in the business, both nationally and internationally, and are voted for by our valued clients who have used our services over the past year. I’m delighted that the calibre of the team’s work has been recognised this way and would like to give a huge thanks to those who took the time to vote for us.

“Business tourism is a key part of the overall visitor economy – the latest figures show that around 15,000 conferences and meetings are held in venues across NewcastleGateshead annually, attracting 940,000 delegates who spend £104 million during their visit.

“Our work to bring high-quality conferences and events here not only delivers direct economic impact, it also showcases the destination’s industry sector strengths and academic excellence to business visitors - who become influential advocates for the place. With this latest award under our belt, we’re looking forward to another busy and successful 2016.”

NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau helps to attract and secure major national and international conferences and events for the region, working with a wide range of venues and partners. The convention bureau team acts as a central point of contact for all conference organisers, providing free, impartial advice and unrivalled local knowledge.

The award winning convention bureau will be exhibiting at International Confex tomorrow. Attendees are invited to join the bureau on stand G60 at 3pm, Wednesday 2 March for the official launch of their new look Conferencing, Events & Accommodation Guide and to experience a 3D projection mapped cake centrepiece, provided by stand partner R&B Group. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau will also be joined by Mercure Newcastle County Hotel, Sage Gateshead, Newcastle United Football Club, Hilton NewcastleGateshead and Sunderland Association Football Club at the show.

Organised by Meetings & Incentive Travel (M&IT) magazine, the awards event took place at Battersea Evolution in London, bringing together over 1000 international industry leaders from the conference sector to reward service and product excellence. There were 19 awards in total, voted for by the readers of M&IT Magazine.

The Convention Bureau is part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, a public private partnership which is funded by Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council and 170 private sector partners from across North East England. NewcastleGateshead Initiative markets NewcastleGateshead on a national and international stage; its mission is to inspire people to visit, and to live, learn, work and invest here.
