NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has been shortlisted as finalists in the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) annual awards for the Best Industry Partnership award.

Paul Szomoru, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said “It’s a fantastic achievement to be recognised for our approach to building partnerships across the meetings industry. We have a strong relationship with Newcastle University and through our  Conference Ambassador Programme we can further promote NewcastleGateshead as a superb destination to host conferences and events. Furthermore it gives us the opportunity to showcase our strong sectors of excellence in science and health, creative and digital, and offshore and marine.”

“To be shortlisted as finalists really highlights not only the unique offer we provide but the value and expertise of our team, who I’m immensely proud of; it is a testament to the outstanding work they do.”

“The last year has been excellent for us with meetings and events secured by the team worth an estimated £11.6 million to the regional economy. Through our Conference Ambassador Programme we plan to build on this success for an even more successful year ahead.”

“Our work to bring high-quality conferences and events here not only delivers direct economic impact, it also showcases the destination to business visitors who become influential advocates for the place – often returning as leisure visitors in the future. We’re looking forward to the awards lunch where we can truly showcase the work we do.”

The Conference Ambassador Programme (CAP), held in partnership with Newcastle University, works with academics, researchers and medical and business professionals to bid for and bring international and national events to the North East. Re-launched in 2014 the programme has been hugely successful attracting a range of events, boosting the economy.

Heather Lishman, Association Director, ABPCO said “The judges were looking for innovation, and evidence of a positive impact and legacy when judging the finalists for Best Industry Partner. We felt that NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau achieved this through their collaborative and strategic approach.”

“It was a hard choice, but the judges were all unanimous about those they felt should have the opportunity to present to the ABPCO community.”

Abi Kelly, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Newcastle University said “Working in partnership with NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s Convention Bureau we are maximising opportunities to bring successful professional conferences and events to Newcastle University, enhancing both the reputation of the University and NewcastleGateshead as a great destination for conferences. Hosting academic conferences is one of the best ways we can raise our profile as a world-class civic university, and position the excellence of our research among our peers.”

The winner will be announced at the ABPCO Excellence Awards and Chairmen's lunch on the 4th December at The Brighton Centre.
