Metro Radio Arena – the music, live entertainment, exhibition and conference venue – is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year since opening its doors in November 1995.

When the venue opened, the first event was a Basketball match, with the first concert by David Bowie; it has seen a busy stream of events ever since. This celebration year kicked off with a bang as international rock band Queen and Adam Lambert played an explosive gig to a sell-out audience of over 10,000 people, closely followed by the much loved live tour of the popular television show, Strictly Come Dancing.

As well as hosting a string of exciting artists including Take That and One Direction, plus sports events including American Basketball, Championship Boxing and Premiership Darts, the Arena is also a leading conference and exhibition venue that can sit 10,000 in the auditorium. With a floor area of 3,960 square metres, it’s the largest venue in North East England.

The Arena has played host to many national and international conferences. In late 2014, 750 health professionals and those involved in the care of mothers and babies attended the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative’s annual conference at the Arena; next month, Manufacturing & Engineering North East will take place (8-9 July), which will include conference sessions, workshops and an exhibition.

Paul Tappenden, General Manager said “The venue has been a valuable asset to the North East region over the past 20 years, attracting some amazing events... This year is about celebrating that achievement so far.”
