VisitEngland, the country’s national tourist board, has announced  that Sage Gateshead has been chosen as the venue to host the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2015. The announcement was made by Penelope, Viscountess Cobham CBE, Chairman of VisitEngland to a packed industry audience at the North East Tourism Awards held at the Stadium of Light. Winners from the North East Tourism Awards will, along with other regional winners, have the opportunity to go forward to the national Awards for Excellence which will be held on Monday 11th May.

In choosing Sage Gateshead, VisitEngland will be bringing the Awards to the North East for the first time, coinciding with an exciting year that also sees Rugby World Cup 2015 coming to Newcastle.

Jenny McGee, VisitEngland's Enterprise Director said "We are really looking forward to bringing the Awards to Gateshead. The Sage is a spectacular venue and together with the convention bureau staff, NewcastleGateshead Initiative has put forward a fantastic support package that meets all our selection criteria.  We look forward to hosting a wonderful evening here."

Sarah Stewart, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “At the North East England Tourism Awards 2014, we celebrated the region’s success as a visitor destination. Businesses, large and small, were congratulated on the quality of service and experience they provide visitors from across the globe. So, I’m delighted that Sage Gateshead has been chosen as the venue for the VisitEngland Excellence Awards 2015, celebrating the quality of national tourism businesses and also shining a spotlight on the fantastic experiences on offer here in the North East.

“We have a track-record of staging large-scale national and international events, from political party conferences to the Culture Action Europe summit which took place at venues across NewcastleGateshead earlier this year. Hosting the national awards reinforces the destination’s credentials as a first-class place to host meetings and events. We very much look forward to welcoming them next year.”

The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence champion best practice and raise the profile of England as a world-class destination. The 2014 Awards Ceremony was attended by over 450 representatives from the tourism industry and media together with guests from the 82 gold, silver, bronze and highly commended award winners.

Applications for some of the Awards are still open. To find out more visit www.visitenglandawards.org
