It’s that time again – Pancake Day is on the horizon. Whether you’re partial to a hearty American-style pancake or prefer your crêpes thin and roll-able, we've done the research and found where you can get your chops around a pancake or two in NewcastleGateshead.

Dig out your stretchy trousers with the elasticated waistband - you can legitimately eat pancakes from dawn to dusk on Shrove Tuesday which is on Tuesday 25 February 2020. Why not dine out rather than getting yet another pancake stuck to the ceiling - here are a few suggestions of where to go...


Grey’s Quarter, intu Eldon Square

Why limit yourselves to one day a year? The Crêpeaffaire, found in intu Eldon Square’s foodie hub Grey's Quarter, caters for your pancake cravings all year round. However, with the approach of Pancake Day, they are no doubt gearing up for the biggest gig of the Crêpeaffaire calendar! If you’re a traditionalist - Crêpeaffaire offer the classic lemon & sugar combo as well as the straight-up Nutella crêpe. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous or want to break out of the confines of crêpe-convention, check out their full sweet and savoury menus or just enjoy the creative freedom to add in extra toppings.

The Dispensary

STACK Newcastle

For the ultimate in Instagrammable pancakes and waffles head to The Dispensary. With a mouth-watering menu and innovative approach to pancake toppings, tuck into their latest pancake special, which is topped with, amongst other things, Daim bars and maple syrup. You will need to brace yourself for a visit to The Dispensary as their creative dishes are utterly delicious but are guaranteed to finish you off! You can find pop-up in STACK Newcastle but The Dispensary’s main café is in the ultra-modern new complex beside St James’ Park stadium. Make sure to get in early and beat the brunch-ing students as it can get very busy at the weekend.

La Petite Crêperie

Quayside Market (Sundays only)

Experience the traditional taste of France at La Petite Crêperie who are regulars at Newcastle’s Quayside Market which takes place on a Sunday. Two friends, both originally from France, offer a selection of sweet and savoury crêpes. Recipes range from the classic butter and sugar, the British favourite of lemon and sugar and their most popular, salted butter caramel.

Monsieur Crepe


However you enjoy your pancakes – Monsieur Crepe café in Heaton will have an option. From stacks of fluffy American-style pancakes to sweet crepes and savoury galettes. Try a peach and white chocolate crepe or cheddar, ham and chilli chutney galette. This dog-friendly café in the suburb of Heaton is warm, relaxed and welcoming but often gets very busy on a Saturday morning – the forward planners amongst you can reserve a table in advance!

Blake's Coffee & Kitchen

Grey Street, Newcastle

This independent café on Newcastle’s famous Grey Street is a great place to enjoy a pancake and a catch up. Try American-style pancakes topped with crispy bacon and maple syrup in the cosy setting of Blake’s.

American Pancakes are part of the breakfast menu which is served until 2pm.

Pancake Day doesn’t have to be overindulgent! Situated underneath the Tyne Bridge, Quay Ingredient is a quaint coffee house renowned for its breakfast menu so why not pop down and indulge in their vegan and gluten-free cinnamon pancakes to celebrate Pancake Day 2020?

The Butterfly Cabinet

Heaton, Newcastle

Why just limit yourself to one topping this Pancake Day or indeed, just one pancake!? The Butterfly Cabinet offers a range of toppings to adorn your stack of four American-style pancakes. With a choice of sauces including maple syrup, chocolate sauce and butterscotch sauce – you will certainly need to wear a stretchy waistband to put away this feast! If you’re feeling fully glutinous on Shrove Tuesday - dare to try The Butterfly Cabinet's famous USA breakfast and tuck into 3 stacked pancakes accompanied by bacon, sausages, hash browns, maple syrup and butter. Phew!

Delicious Decadence

Jesmond, Newcastle

If you'd rather not try tossing pancakes at home or letting the kids (and big kids) make a mess of the kitchen, then head along to Delicious Decadence where you can enjoy their American pancakes with streaky bacon and maple syrup while the kids try out the novelty Smiley Face Pancakes.

Breakfast is served all day, every day so drop in for your pancakes morning, noon or night (well, between 9.30am & 5pm on a Tuesday!)

The Naked Deli

Grey Street Newcastle

Independent café The Naked Deli on Grey Street in the centre of Newcastle have a tasty range of protein pancakes which will leave you feeling supercharged for the day. Choose from banana and peanut butter sauce or perhaps fresh berries yoghurt and clean chocolate sauce to top your three pancakes.  Famed for promoting clean eating, using organic produce and taking the NewcastleGateshead hipster scene by storm – The Naked Deli (which also a café in Heaton, Gosforth and a kiosk in Fenwick Food Hall) is proud of its healthy and nutritious menu.  You don’t need to be a gym-buff to enjoy The Naked Deli’s version of the much-loved pancake.
