Azuma trains arrive in Newcastle to help you travel to Newcastle from London in style

Travelling to Newcastle by train just got a whole lot smoother. LNER have rolled out their swanky new Azuma trains this year and in August 2019, the first of the flash new fleet edge north to cover LNER’s East Coast mainline.

Faster, quieter and with bags of leg room, you will be travelling in style and slicing precious time off your journey whether you’re travelling from London Kings Cross to Newcastle or south from Edinburgh to explore the North East. LNER’s state-of-the-art trains signal the biggest transformation on the East Coast mainline in over 30 years. Get ready to whizz to Newcastle for a city break aboard an Azuma train.

Here are some top facts about the new Azuma trains:

  • You no longer need to panic that your phone battery is going to die just as you need to show your eticket. Nor will you need to awkwardly ask if the stranger next to you minds having your phone cable stretched over their knee. There are enough sockets for everyone and you will find them between the seats so it’s all yours!
  • There is more leg room too – 7cm extra to be precise - as well as new, comfy seats which have been ergonomically designed especially to give you an excellent and comfortable journey.
  • However you plan to use your journey to Newcastle, you can rest assured that the new Azuma has free WIFI available in all its coaches.
  • The carriages feel light, airy and spacious with even more room for your bags above and below your seat.
  • It’s all in the detail – coat hooks at your seat, sturdier trays which are great for laptops and USB ports in First Class.
  • The Azuma is built using Japanese bullet-train technology and a major part of the work to build the trains was carried out at locally-based manufactuers, Hitachi in Newton Aycliffe.
  • There are almost 100 more seats in each train and 65 new Azumas set to replace the existing 45-train fleet by the summer of 2020.
  • The Azuma is also a greener option for travel and has reduced emissions by 90% campared to other high speed trains. Noise pollution to the surrounding areas is also at a minimum as the trains are much quieter whether you're inside or waving as it zips by.

We’re looking forward to welcoming even more of you to Newcastle so why not start planning your visit? Step off the Azuma ready for a packed city break in the North East – you can find out more about what’s on in Newcastle and Gateshead or where to start exploring on our website.
