This year has been quite a busy one for fans of sport. We welcomed thousands to Newcastle for the European Rugby Finals back in May. The World Transplant Games brought a week of sporting action to venues in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland in August. Now it’s time for more with a packed weekend of sport in Newcastle and Gateshead from Friday 6 – Tuesday 10 September 2019.

World class rugby at St James' Park in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Rugby: England v Italy, Quilter International | Friday 6 September

On Friday 6 September, Newcastle’s iconic St James’ Park will once again host a major rugby match. This time – England will take on Italy in the final warm up before the national teams head to Tokyo for the Rugby World Cup 2020. The match is part of the Quilter International and will kick off at 7.45pm on Friday 6 September.

Simplyhealth Great North Run in Newcastle

Athletics: Great North Run Weekend | Saturday 7 – Sunday 8 September

The Great North Run weekend has become a much-loved fixture in the North East calendar. Whether or not you consider yourself a sports fan or even a runner, the Great North Run is still worth watching and is loved by all. On Saturday 7 September, head along to the Quayside to cheer on the next generation as they take part in the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini runs as well as the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Wheelchair events. There will be chance to see the elite athletes compete in their 1-mile race along the iconic Quayside too.

And that’s all before Simplyhealth Great North Run kicks off on Sunday 8 September. The atmosphere will be buzzing as tens of thousands of participants get ready to run the famous half marathon. If you’re spectating, take up your place on the Tyne Bridge for a glimpse of the elite athletes, celebrities and many costumed charity runners taking part. Good luck to everyone running this year’s Great North Run.

Cycling - The Tour of Britain in Newcastle and Gateshead

Cycling: Tour of Britain | Monday 9 – Tuesday 10 September

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is the country’s biggest free-to-watch sporting event, bringing world class athletes and elite sporting action to cities, towns and villages each September.  Fans of cycling will be able to watch the Tour of Britain, the UK’s most prestigious professional cycling race – when it arrives into Newcastle on Monday 9 September and then leaves the region from Gateshead the next day. The thrilling road race will whizz from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Newcastle on the third stage of the mammoth cycling race. The cyclists will be welcomed with fireworks as they hit the finishing mark along Grey Street. Stage four of the cycling race is considered the toughest phase of the action. Cyclist will leave Gateshead to begin their 106mile race to Cumbria. The Tour of Britain is free to watch so head down to wave as the cyclist whizz through our region.
