The Rocky Horror Show is back at the Sunderland Empire for one week only so there’s not much time to build the ANTICI…PATION! Ali from our Marketing team went along to the press night at Sunderland Empire so that she could give you a little sneak peek into the new production!

The Rocky Horror Show is performing at Sunderland Empire until Saturday 2 February 2019.

Rocky Horror Show at Sunderland Empire

For me the cast list for The Rocky Horror Show at Sunderland Empire is its own sort of Time Warp into my childhood, because around the millennium I remember dancing around my room to the music of a1 and watching the first series of Trigger Happy TV, which is where two of these production’s stars began. Tricky Happy TV's Dom Joly takes to the stage as the Narrator, and a1’s Ben Adams is cast in the role of Brad.

When asked about the new role Joly said: “I'm soooo excited to play the part of the narrator in The Rocky Horror Show. I've been entranced by the show since I stumbled upon it, one late night, in a cinema in Notting Hill Gate in 1990. More importantly, I haven't had the opportunity to wear fishnets since I was a Goth back in the late Eighties...any excuse..."

Dom's enthusiasm certainly shines through, making him the perfect choice for the Narrator. As anyone who’s been to see the show will know, die hard fans come to the theatre in costume and have a variety of responses and suggestions that are shouted out in between the characters dialogue. Quick-witted Joly was brilliant at picking up on what was being said and bantering back to the audience, making this a truly interactive production of The Rocky Horror Show.

Rocky Horror Show at Sunderland Empire, Joanne Clifton as Janet and Stephen Webb as Frank

Joly and Adams are joined by Strictly Come Dancing Champion Joanne Clifton as Janet and West End star Stephen Webb as Frank. Kristian Lavercombe will also be reprising his role as Riff Raff, following more than a whopping 1,300 performances in The Rocky Horror Show around the world.

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their favourite college professor. It’s an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits. Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, The Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. But be warned, this show has rude parts…

Rocky Horror Show at Sunderland Empire 2019

I’ve always loved the 1975 feature film, and this was the third time I’ve been to see the show on stage (I know, I’m a theatre geek!), so I took along a friend who’d never seen the show as a fresh pair of eyes. By the interval she was already hooked by the fantastic musical number and bizarre characters, and at the end of the show the entire theatre – fans and newbies alike – were up on their feet doing the Time Warp.

So there you have it – whether you’re a massive fan of the show like me, or have only heard the Time Warp at weddings, this production is a guaranteed party, combining science-fiction, horror, comedy and music while encouraging audience participation meaning, of course, getting dressed in the most outrageous fancy dress!
