Welcome to NewcastleGateshead in 2019

Happy New Year everybody and welcome to 2019! We can't wait to see you in NewcastleGateshead and boy do we have some great highlights for you! It's going to be a brilliant year packed with must-see sporting moments, brand new exhibitions and not-to-be-missed events.

Here are just some of the highlights for the year. Head to our What's On listings to see the full events which will be updated throughout the year.

January 2019

NE1 Restaurant Week Newcastle

New year, new you? The 2019 Great North Run ballot opens on 2 January. Go on, you only need to exercise your typing fingers at this point... you can build up to putting your trainers back on.

Sage Gateshead invite you to a celebration of the UK's most exciting contemporary musicians. The New Year New Artists' Festival (Thursday 17 - Sunday 20 January) will have a mixed lined-up which includes classical, indie, folk, world and jazz musicians.

January can feel like a long month so treat yourself midway through with a meal (or two) in the Toon. The ever-popular NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week (dates to be finalised) returns with a tasty list of participating venues including firm favourites Dabbawal and Porterhouse Butcher and Grill join over 100 of Newcastle's best cafes, pubs and restaurants... and not a turkey in sight!

Vegan Restaurant week will be returning this January too and if last year's impressive line-up of venues isn't anything to go by, we're in for a treat. More details will follow.

Basketball superstars - Newcastle Eagles - have a new home. The local team on a nation winning streak will play to a sold-out crowd this January as fans pack out the brand new arena. Don't miss a brilliant offer from NEoffers to watch the Eagles live this spring. Find out more.

February 2019

Celebrate the Year of the Pig this February 2019 with another Chinese New Year event promising vibrant activities and parades in Newcastle (Sunday 10 February). Activities will take place around Stowell Street, China Town with the much-loved, traditional dragon and lion dance taking place at The Green, Old Eldon Square at approximately 11.30am. Watch out for a colourful parade too.

Also in February, War Horse gallops onto the stage at Sunderland Empire for another award-winning performance (Wednesday 6 - Saturday 23 February).

This month, Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children's Books launch a brand new exhibition to celebrate 30 years of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant (Friday 8 February). This will be the first major retrospective of illustrator David McKee's striking artwork. The colourful exhibition will be a great way for fans of the world famous Elmer series to get ready for this summer's region-wide elephant parade starting in August.

Get ready for the first big race of 2019 at Newcastle Racecourse - the Betfred Eider Chase (Saturday 23 February)! Join Newcastle Racecourse for a Saturday afternoon of great jump racing, featuring the historic Betfred Eider Handicap Chase, a trial for the most famous jump race of them all, the Grand National.

March 2019

Museum of the Moon at Life Science Centre Newcastle

Get ready to take A Bite Out of the Moon (Friday 1 March *update* this event has now been cancelled) or celebrate the first day of spring with a Supermoon Supper (Thursday 21 March) - both against the breathtaking backdrop of Life Science Centre's newest art installation; a breathtaking 7 metre moon.

The first of this year's major rugby events sees The Big One (Saturday 23 March) return to St James' Park when Newcastle Falcons take on Sale Sharks on the iconic pitch.

BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival (Friday 29 - Sunday 31 March) also returns to Sage Gateshead for another free weekend of provocative debate, new ideas, music and performance. 

April 2018

Puppetry Festival Newcastle

Popular food, drink and all-round good-time venue Wylam Brewery at the Palace of Arts will host a Royal Northern Sinfonia mini-series this April. Perfect for fans of the musical style but also a great opportunity for classical newbies to enjoy its delights. 

Moving Parts: Newcastle Puppetry Festival 2019  makes a comeback with a packed programme of workshops, masterclasses, parades and events.

Fans of the annual Maker Faire held at Life Science Centre might be expecting to see the new dates for 2019. However, after 10 years of hosting this amazing event, Life Science Centre has now bid a fond farewell to Maker Faire. However, lovers of all things making can rest easy, as the popular science attraction will be opening a new space dedicated to crafting, tinkering and creativity in the spring of 2019. We'll keep you updated with details.

May 2018

Dippy on Tour at Great North Museum 2019 Newcastle

Summer will be in the air folks - breathe it in! Also this month, Newcastle will be the host city for European rugby’s biggest weekend (Friday 10 - Saturday 11 May), with the Heineken’s Champions Cup and European Challenge Cup taking place at St James’ Park.

This is Tomorrow Festival (Friday 24 - Saturday 25 May) returns (to a new location at Exhibition Park) with a banging line-up including Foals and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

Everyone's favourite - The Late Shows (Friday 17 - Saturday 18 May) - makes a welcome return and the Natural History Museum's famous Dippy plods his way to a mega stint at Great North Museum (opens Saturday 18 May). What a time to be alive!?

June 2018

Northumberland Plate

June is the time to spice up your life when none other than 90s super stars - the Spice Girls (Thursday 6 June) - roll into Sunderland for the comeback performance of 2019! 

Northumberland Plate Day (Saturday 29 June) is the biggest event of the year at Newcastle Racecourse attracting a diverse crowd of regular and one-off race-goers. This year's event will be extra special with a live performance from Madness!  

This summer - you are invited to Newcastle for some much needed rest and relaxation. Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths will reopen after a lenghty closure period whilst this historic facility was lovingly restored. We can't be sure of timings BUT we will definitely keep you updated!

July 2018

Another event for sports fans this year sees the Cricket World Cup (Friday 28 June, Monday 1 July, Wednesday 3 July) make a number of stop offs at The Riverside Durham where fans can enjoy top-class cricket in the sunshine.

Northern Pride Newcastle Festival (Friday 19 - Sunday 21 July) is a celebration of LGBT life on Tyneside and is one of the biggest and most diverse free events in the North East. This summer's event will be as big and bold as ever with a Pride march through Newcastle, music, education, fun and celebration.

August 2018

Elmer's Great North Parade 2019 Newcastle and the North East

Fans of 2016's much-loved Snowdogs Trail will be excited to hear that a herd of Elmer elephants will be going on a Great North Parade this August thanks to St Oswald's Hospice (launches Wednesday 21 August).

NewcastleGateshead will welcome over 3,000 participates from 70 countries when they host World Transplant Games 2019 (Saturday 17 - Saturday 24 August). This inspiring event is a celebration of a second chance of living life to the full and will raise awareness of organ donation.

Multi-awarding-winning West End classic Les Miserables will be at Theatre Royal Newcastle for an emotional 7-week run starting on 15 August. 

September 2019

The Quilter's International at St James' Park (Friday 6 September) will see the England rugby team take on Italy. The match is the first time England have played a full international in Newcastle and is one of the must-see sporting events in the North East for 2019.

You don't need reminding that the Simplyhealth Great North Run (Sunday 8 September) will hit the streets once again - we're sure you already have your running trainers dusted off in preparation!

October 2018

Romeo and Juliet at Theatre Royal Newcastle Matthew Bourne

Craft Beer Calling (Thursday 24 - Saturday 26 October) at Wylam Brewery, Palace of Arts is one weekend dedicated to introducing you to an assembly of some of the world's leading craft breweries all under one roof. 

There will be plenty of frights and spooks during Halloween for kids and big kids alike.
Matthew Bourne's Romeo and Juliet (Wednesday 9 - Saturday 12 October) will have you transfixed at Theatre Royal Newcastle and don't forget to raise a glass during the annual Oktoberfest celebrations.

Comedian, actor, playwright and all-round funny guy Ben Elton will be returning to the stage to perform his legendary stand-up for the first time in 15 years! Join Ben Elton at Tyne Theatre and Opera House for brand new material and plenty of laughs on Friday 11 October 2019.

November 2018

November is a great month in Newcastle and Gateshead. You'll find many of the festive ice rinks begin to appear at Life Science Centre, Beamish Museum and Alnwick Gardens. When the winter sun shines, it is a great chance to get outside and discover the beautiful countryside surrounding Newcastle and Gateshead. December 2018

Christmas markets in NewcastleGateshead

Nearly twelve months from now and we will be back eating too many mince pies and enjoying the festivities once again! NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival 2019 will be as sparkling as ever with many reasons to visit our canny city for the festive season including Christmas markets, outdoor ice skating and festive performances galore. 




  1. Lunarts
    We just cancelled a visit to New Castle for April 2019 (the reason starts with a B and ends with rexit) so we are in doubt when to come over from the Netherlands but we will one day in 2019. So, Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year for now.
