About

New Years EveHead into Newcastle City Centre this New Year’s Eve and you’ll see a city taken over by characters from Norse mythology and Viking Folklore in our annual Winter Carnival celebrations.

Meet Thor and the Black Elves, watch out for Odin’s wolves prowling the streets, and see Heimdall on his white stallion leaping over the Rainbow Bridge in the 2011 New Year’s Eve Carnival Parade.

Bring the family to meet Newcastle’s Ice Queen at Monument as she blows snowy blasts
across the frozen city, joined this year by the mythical World Serpent of Norse legend, grown so large as to encircle the whole world in his slithering grasp.

Look out as Thor’s Hammers demonstrate their percussive strength, and the Kingsmen’s
fire dance leads a flaming Viking longship. Hundreds of local residents take part in the carnival parade, working with local artists and Bravura carnival arts to create intricate costumes and choreographed routines to add to the excitement.

Join in as traditional folk music and dance meet carnival performance as the parade moves off from Monument, along Northumberland Street, to Newcastle Civic Centre where the New Year’s Eve firework finale lifts off at 6pm. Winter Carnival returns once again to bring in the New Year with a magical celebration, culminating in the popular firework finale at Newcastle Civic Centre.
