Ballet Lorent at the Theatre Royal
Film & Theatre
While Newcastle’s Theatre Royal (regional home to the Royal Shakespeare Company) and the Sunderland Empire provide world-class theatre from West End extravaganzas to intellectual dramas, smaller venues such as South Shield’s Customs House, which also houses a cinema and gallery, and the newly refurbished and hi-tech Whitley Bay Playhouse nurture and developing regional talent to provide truly intimate and original performances.
For something a little different in the heart of the city visit Live Theatre, whose recent production of The Pitmen Painters received enormours international acclaim, even enjoying a successful run on Broadway, or Northern Stage, whose eclectic output is a hit with theatre-goers young and old.
For film and cinematic events NewcastleGateshead is well served by Tyneside Cinema, an independent with real personality in a beautiful art deco building which, following a recent renovation, boasts four screens, two bars, tea rooms and much more, whilst quirky, smaller independents Side Cinema and Star and Shadow Cinema are also worth exploring.
For more mainstream releases we recommend a trip to the Odeon IMAX at Gateshead's Metrocentre where you can enjoy a choice of luxury, premier and standard seats with 12 screens, a VIP area and the first 3D IMAX screen in the region!
