From leading artists who have held exhibitions here, like Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid, to smaller North East artists - art galleries in Newcastle and Gateshead cater for every art enthusiast.

Gateshead's BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is the only non-TATE venue outside of London to host the coveted Turner Prize and is recognised by many as one of the country's best examples of a modern art venue. As well as housing some of the top local exhibitions it provides an ever-changing calendar from critically acclaimed artists from around the globe.

Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle has an impressive collection of art and sculpture with its Newcastle exhibition programme renowned for bringing the biggest names in historic, modern and contemporary art to the North East. There permanent displays of John Martin's breath-taking The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and William Holman Hunt's poignant painting of Isabella and the Pot of Basil are always worth a visit.

Round the corner at Hatton Gallery, the recently renovated art gallery has a diverse collection which includes over 3,000 works from the 14th – 20th centuries. They also stage modern and contemporary exhibitions; working closely with students from Newcastle University to display their work on an annual basis.

The Biscuit Factory on the edge of Ouseburn is the UK's biggest commercial gallery and therefore the perfect place to start or expand your personal collection. Formerly a Victorian warehouse, the beautiful and dynamic gallery space is set over two floors and exhibitions display a range of fine art, sculpture, prints and crafts. 

Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books has exhibitions which celebrate children’s literature and showcase the stages of creating a finished book from rough drafts to finish product with illustrations and archive material on display that will fascinate any creative soul. Browse the permanent and changing exhibitions on display at museums and attractions around the region too which highlight the impact of science and innovation as well as culture and heritage.

The museums across the region including Discovery Museum, Great North Museum and Life Science Centre introduce exciting and innovative exhibitions on regular basis as well as showcasing fascinating permanent exhibitions which tell the story of Newcastle and Gateshead.
