Bupa Great North Run Weekend
Sporting Event
Celebrating its 31st year in 2012, the Bupa Great North Run takes place on Sunday 16 September 2012 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Bupa Great North Run is the world’s most iconic half marathon. It has become an iconic feature of NewcastleGateshead’s cultural and sporting programme. Around 56,000 runners from over 50 countries enter the half marathon each year, tackling the 13.1 mile course which stretches from Newcastle city centre to the seafront in South Shields. The Bupa Great North Run is the flagship event in a weekend celebrating the North East’s passion for sport.
On Saturday 15 September, over 5,000 young people are expected to participate in the Bupa Junior and Mini Great North Run, which attracts participants from across the region and throughout the UK.
The action continues at the annual Great North CityGames, where top international athletes from around the world will compete in the shadow of the iconic Tyne Bridge. This unique, and completely free event, takes place on a purpose built, street level, athletics track. It offers spectators the unparalleled opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the biggest names in athletics, which in Olympic year will undoubtedly include several 2012 medallists.
