With fantastic city-centre shopping provided by Eldon Square and Gateshead’s Metrocentre offering visitors bags of choice in high-street and designer fashions, you might have trouble deciding where to start! Even the most individual shopper will find something to suit them around Market Street, High Bridge and Hood Street in Newcastle city centre, or in the many boutiques of the fashion-conscious suburb Jesmond.
As part of Alive After Five you can now enjoy Newcastle’s excellent shopping for longer than ever before. Retailers are leading the way with Eldon Square and many smaller businesses across the city remaining open until 8pm on weeknights and 7pm on Saturdays, allowing shoppers more flexibility to pop to the shops after work or before heading out for the evening. Restaurants, cafes and bars will support the initiative with many cafes staying open later and bars and restaurant offering more early evening specials as well as introducing combined shopping, eating and cultural ‘experiences’.
Eldon Square, one of the UK’s largest city centre shopping complexes, recently unveiled the brand new St Andrew’s Way, featuring a four-storey Debenhams, world famous brands including Apple, Guess and Hollister and flagship stores for New Look, River Island and Topshop. With over 150 shops throughout Eldon Square including world-famous department stores Fenwick, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, as well as an exciting choice of cafés and restaurants, you’ll be spoilt for choice during your visit to Newcastle.

Gateshead’s Metrocentre is Britain's best and Europe’s largest indoor shopping and leisure complex with over 330 stores stocking everything from high-end fashion to homewares, and the newest development, Metrocentre Qube, houses restaurants, The Namco Funscape with ten-pin bowling, the fastest dodgem track in Europe, soft play area, electronic games and a fully licensed sports bar as well as an ODEON IMAX Cinema.
Discover Fenwick and high-end fashion labels
Fenwick Department Store, founded here in Newcastle in 1882, is one of largest department stores in the UK and its iconic green bags have become quite sought-after. Now eleven stores strong, the flagship Newcastle branch is one of the most luxurious department stores in the UK whose food court is renowned for selling some of the finest produce available on the high street, a selection of which is served in the store's eight eateries.
Vivienne Westwood’s 2000 sq ft Newcastle store on Hood Street stocks all the designer ranges including Gold Couture, Red Label, Anglomania and MAN as well as an extensive range of accessories, jewellery, shoes and perfume for the high-end and fashion-conscious shopper.
Shopping further afield
The Bridges in Sunderland offers high-street and designer fashions amongst cafes, confectioners and chocolatiers to boost your energy for even more shopping, whilst Royal Quays Outlet Centre offers a very wide range of famous names and big brands at unbelievable prices with upto 60% off everything across the centre as well as excellent food and coffee shops all just twenty minutes from the city centre. A little further afield in Seaham you will find Dalton Park Outlet Shopping Centre, the biggest in the region with over 60 stores.
Bargain-hunters will be in paradise at the eclectic markets of coastal towns Tynemouth and South Shields. In the beautiful covered Victorian Metro Station at Tynemouth you’ll find trinkets galore to browse and buy, all just minutes from Tynemouth Village’s wide selection of boutiques stocking everything from handmade gifts to designer ladies-wear, including the Green Ginger Arcade with a huge range of speciality shops. South Shields Market in the pedestrianised town centre offers bargains and banter close to high-street shops and a selection of bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
