Home of many national and international events, including international athletics, rugby and many major rock and pop concerts.
We're spending £36m to bring new and upgraded leisure facilities to Gateshead. It's the largest single investment we've ever undertaken in leisure and part of our commitment to 'build an active future' and improve the health of Gateshead people.
Over 1.7 million people a year already use our leisure facilities. We want to make sure our new facilities are places that people want to use and have had positive feedback about our plans at various consultation events.
The work is staggered over a three-year period so we can offer as wide a variety of leisure opportunities as possible to Gateshead residents whilst this massive transformation to facilities takes place.
The work will be completed by summer 2011 in time for the excitement surrounding the 2012 London Olympics.
To undertake these works access to the stadium will change. A temporary reception will be provided near to the existing reception, with changing rooms only being available from the athletics hall building. The Sports Hall and gym will remain open throughout the development.
