Water Mill
A specially commissioned floating artwork, which visitors can board for free, will stay on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside throughout the summer as part of Artists taking the lead, one of twelve public art commissions funded by the UK Arts Councils, celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
After three years of development, ~Flow will take up residence next to the Millennium Bridge, floating on the north side of the River Tyne during the spring and summer of 2012.
~Flow is a tidemill, and uses a huge waterwheel to draw energy from the River Tyne’s current to power interactive musical instruments on board. The sounds the handcrafted instruments make will change as the water from the River Tyne passing through the mill changes, as well as by visitors manually altering the instruments.
Visitors can board for free from 11am - 5pm Wed - Sun, and from March - September look out for a wide ranging programme of special events taking place aboard ~Flow. You can check out What's On on their website.
The artwork is the result of a collaboration between Owl Project (artistic lead) and Ed Carter (producer and original concept).
