CIRCA Screen
A new space dedicated to artists’ film and video
Launching September 2011

CIRCA Projects are proud to present a new programme of exhibitions of singlescreen artist film and video work in a new dedicated space, in Sunderland, entitled
CIRCA Screen. CIRCA Screen is a liminal space between gallery and cinema, presenting a programme of single-screen artists’ film and video, promoting dialogue
around the ways in which artists work with the moving image and the screen.

Over the next ten-months, CIRCA Screen will present new and archival work by some of the most innovative and thought-provoking artists working with the medium, connecting with international festivals, organisations and institutions to create a snapshot of contemporary artist film and video. Film and video is a powerful, inspirational, and creative medium for contemporary artists and the CIRCA Screen programme celebrates and critically explores the increasing fluidity of practice between film and the visual arts through presenting artworks by renowned filmmakers alongside major artists who have employed film as a means of finding new expressions.

The programme intends to provoke debate and dialogue, through a regular series of free talks, screenings and challenging exhibitions, creating a forum for discussions that go beyond the immediate concerns of artist’s film and video – towards an all-encompassing dialogue on film production within the wider arts, new technologies and modern culture, with a particular focus on art-historical context.

CIRCA Screen’s autumn 2011 programme of events will feature an exclusive presentation of the Jarman Awards Touring Programme 2011 (13 Sept), followed by exhibitions by internationally renowned sculptor Eric Bainbridge (21 Sept – 21 Oct) and London-based conceptual artist Doug Fishbone (27 Oct – 25 Nov).
