Pupil’s winning painting becomes unique Tall Ships t-shirt

Nine-year-old Emma Russell from St Lawrence’s Primary School in Byker will be sporting her very own Tall Ships t-shirt design after winning first prize in a painting competition run by the Markets Team at Newcastle City Council.

Emma’s painting was one of more than 700 entered into the competition which invited schools across Newcastle to send in their pictures based on the Tall Ships theme.

A total of 23 schools took part and entries came from youngsters aged from four to 18.  A pupil from each school will receive prizes of an official Tall Ships Races t-shirt and cap.

Markets Manager Paula Bashforth said “Emma’s design really stood out and shows crowds of people viewing the Tall Ships along the Quayside.  The colours are really vibrant and I’m sure lots of people will envy her unique t-shirt.

“This is by far the most successful competition we have held and shows how the visit of the Tall Ships has captured the imagination of youngsters of all ages.”

The paintings are currently on display in the Grainger Market where every available space has been used.  They will be on display until Monday, August 8.
