  • In 2011 the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art will be the first non-Tate venue outside of London to host the most prestigious contemporary art prize in Europe – the Turner Prize.
  • Newcastle was named Most Sustainable City in the UK for a second year running in October 2010 by Forum for the Future. Projects ranging from an electric car hub, with nearly 600 charging points, to an urban bees programme, helped Newcastle to feature strongly in all of 13 indicators.
  • Newcastle was voted third best city in Europe (second in the UK behind London) for Nightlife in tripadvisor’s Travellers Choice Awards 2010.
  • In November 2009, Newcastle was awarded the title of most sustainable city in the UK in an influential new report by Forum for the Future acknowledging success in promoting environmental and sustainability issues.
  • North East England is tipped as a must-see destination by Lonely Planet Blue List 2008.
  • The Sage Gateshead was named as one of the top ten best buildings of the last 100 years in England by The Rough Guide, May 2008.
  • The Angel of the North was named as the UK’s most recognisable landmark in a survey by Travelodge in May 2008.
  • NewcastleGateshead was shortlisted for the Academy of Urbanism 2009 awards, as European City of the Year.
  • Grainger Town won the Academy of Urbanism’s coveted ‘Great Neighbourhood’ Award 2008 at a ceremony on 9 November 2008. It beat off stiff competition from London’s Soho and Dublin’s Temple Bar at the ceremony, which recognises the best urban areas of Britain and Ireland. NewcastleGateshead Quayside was also named as a finalist in the ‘Great Place’ category. 
  • Newcastle was voted ‘Best City in the North’ by Daily Telegraph readers in April 2007.
